NH DCYF Title IV-E Child Welfare Scholarship Program

Preparing the Next Generation of Child Welfare Professionals in New Hampshire

The Colby-Sawyer College Master of Social Work (MSW) program is proud to partner with the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Division for Children, Youth and Families (NH DCYF) through the federally and state supported Title IV-E Child Welfare Program. This partnership is designed to strengthen New Hampshire's child welfare workforce by supporting graduate students who are committed to serving children, youth and families across the state.

Through this competitive scholarship opportunity, one selected MSW student per year receives financial support while preparing for a meaningful career in public child welfare.

The Title IV-E program is designed to:

  • Prepare future social workers with the advanced knowledge, professional values, and practice skills needed for effective child welfare practice.
  • Support the development of a highly qualified workforce dedicated to protecting and strengthening children and families throughout New Hampshire.
  • Expand the pipeline of master's-level social workers entering careers with NH DCYF.
  • Foster leadership in trauma-informed, culturally responsive and evidence-informed child welfare practice.

Students selected for the annual program become part of a collaborative learning experience that combines graduate education with focused preparation for careers in child welfare.

Scholarship Benefits

Recipients of the Colby-Sawyer Title IV-E Scholarship receive:

  • Full tuition support for one academic year of the MSW program.
  • A $4,500 stipend to support living and learning while in the practicum setting.
  • Opportunities to engage with child welfare professionals throughout the academic year.
  • Practicum placement with a NH DCYF office (efforts are made to place students with an office close to their residence).
  • Preparation for employment with NH DCYF following graduation.
  • Professional networking and career development opportunities within New Hampshire's child welfare system.

Eligibility and Application Process

Selection is competitive and based on demonstrated commitment to children, youth, families and public service.

Applicants will be asked to submit:

  • A completed application.
  • A personal essay describing their interest in child welfare and professional goals.
  • Three letters of recommendation (academic, professional or supervisory).
  • Authorization for a background check.
  • Participation in an interview with representatives from Colby-Sawyer College and NH DCYF.

Additional application instructions and deadlines will be announced each year. Generalist (first year) and specialist (second year & advanced standing) students are eligible to apply and are required to live in or immediately adjacent to New Hampshire.

Employment Commitment

In exchange for scholarship support, recipients agree to accept employment with New Hampshire DCYF following graduation, contingent upon meeting hiring requirements and the availability of an appropriate position.

Scholarship recipients are expected to complete two years of employment with NH DCYF for each year in receipt of scholarship funds after earning their MSW degree. This service commitment reflects the shared investment of Colby-Sawyer College and NH DCYF in preparing skilled professionals to meet the needs of New Hampshire's children and families.
