Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy technicians (PT) work collaboratively with pharmacists, nurses, doctors and insurers to support a positive patient experience. PTs work in a variety of areas across Dartmouth Health, including outpatient (retail), inpatient (hospital) and specialty pharmacies.

Some of the duties of a PT include:

  • Process prescription orders.
  • Perform medication compounding and packaging.
  • Restock medication kits used during emergency situations.
  • Manage medication inventory and ensure products are in date.
  • Monitor prescription claims and payments.
  • Investigate patient benefits and resolve insurance claims.
  • Provide an exceptional patient experience.

Dartmouth Health Career Institute (DHCI) pharmacy technician trainees are enrolled in a 9-week intensive training program which leads to national certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam and the credential of a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). Upon successful completion, trainees begin work in the pharmacy and are enrolled in a 2,000-hour Department of Labor registered apprenticeship.

A total of 60 credits is required to earn the Associate of Health Science degree. DHCI pharmacy technician trainees earn 19 credits through Colby-Sawyer for the PT training coursework, followed by 21 credits for elective courses taken during the student’s apprenticeship. An additional 8 credits are taken through the DHCI following certification. The final 20 credits are derived from 8-week online liberal education courses taught by Colby-Sawyer faculty. Please note: The additional credits students earn can be rolled into a bachelor’s degree program.

*Course is taken online following the 9-week training program
