Faculty and Instructor Responsibilities

At the beginning of each semester, instructors should briefly review the primary and alternate exits from the classroom, the building’s designated assembly area, and how students will receive emergency instructions.

When an evacuation alarm sounds or an evacuation is ordered, instructors should:

  • Stop instructional activities and direct students to evacuate immediately using the nearest safe exit.
  • Provide calm, clear instructions and help maintain an orderly evacuation.
  • Alert others in the immediate area as they leave.
  • Close classroom doors when leaving, if this can be done without delaying evacuation. Doors should not be locked.
  • Do not use elevators unless specifically authorized by emergency responders.
  • Proceed to the designated assembly area and remain with the class when practical.
  • Report anyone believed to be missing, unable to evacuate, or remaining in the building, including the person’s last known location.
  • Follow instructions from Campus Safety and emergency responders.

Instructors should not delay their own evacuation to search the building, retrieve belongings, or attempt a rescue beyond their training or physical capabilities. Individuals who may need evacuation assistance should follow their established emergency evacuation plan.
