Make a bold statement

Ceramics, metals and jewelry, and sculpture are three-dimensional embodiments of thoughts and ideas. They have the power to motivate by connecting the analytical mind with emotions.

Explore the multifaceted worlds of ceramics, metals and jewelry, and sculpture through conceptual, formal and technical studio work. Collaborate with faculty, visiting artists and scholars to provide individualized instruction in all aspects of functional and sculptural ceramics. Develop your understanding of three-dimensional ideation and object construction, including inner and outer space requirements, environment and scale. Progress by learning the importance of armature building, the absolutes of gravity and how to build expressional works of art through additive/subtractive processes including clay modeling, welding steel, wood construction, mixed media, carved stone or wood, and installation-based art.

With a scenic view of Mount Kearsarge, cultivate your talents in inspiring spaces equipped with pottery wheels and hand-building tables, and explore innovative firing using a variety of kilns including electric, gas, wood and Raku. Learn traditional and modern approaches to the medium including function, vessels, sculpture and mixed media.

Celebrate your work

The Gladys Greenbaum Meyers Juried Student Art Exhibition, the college's largest art annual exhibition, draws an impressive audience from the college community and the general public. The honor of being selected to show in the juried exhibition adds esteem and value to your academic accomplishments and your professional portfolio. In addition to awards, outstanding artists are also selected for scholarships and commissioned pieces.

The annual Senior Art Exhibition showcases the best work of all graduating art majors. The exhibition demonstrates the growth, skill and professionalism developed while studying at Colby-Sawyer. Awards are presented to artists whose works best reflect diversity of media, techniques, influences and experiences.
