Colby-Sawyer MSW program ranked No. 1 in state, again

For the second time in six months, Colby-Sawyer's Master of Social Work program has been named the best in New Hampshire.

The most recent honor comes from MSW Online, which creates informational, bias-free resources to connect students with the right programs, certifications and career paths. In spring 2025, CounselingPsychology.org also ranked Colby-Sawyer's MSW program No. 1 in the Granite State.

“We're thrilled by this acknowledgement,” said Professor Kate Turcotte, who founded and directs the program. “Faculty have worked to create a unique and supportive environment for master’s-level social work education, and it has been great to be recognized.”

MSW Online ranked Colby-Sawyer's program No. 1 based on five factors: accreditation and academic quality; specialization options and career support; affordability and financial support; online learning design and support; and accessibility and scheduling.

And, CounselingPsychology.org based its seeding on the program’s acceptance and completion rates, tuition and fees in relation to the local cost of living, accreditation status, competitiveness of the institution, diversity of programs offered, size of the school and department, and years of experience/tenure of faculty.

“What makes this program stand out is the personal connection our faculty build with students,” said Turcotte. “We’ve designed the curriculum to balance flexibility with academic rigor, so that students can engage deeply. We take great pride in creating a community where students feel supported and challenged to grow.”

Colby-Sawyer offers a 24-month MSW track for traditional students and a 12-month advanced option for those who hold a Bachelor of Social Work.

Cohorts are capped at 17 students — who can attend live online classes or view recorded classes when their schedule allows.

The MSW curriculum emphasizes social justice. Students may concentrate in any number of areas of specialization — from clinical work as a licensed therapist to policy development and advocacy.

Through coursework and individually tailored, in-the-field practicum experiences, Colby-Sawyer's students connect theory and evidence-based practices to real-world settings in a variety of agencies and organizations. The college, which partners with Dartmouth Health, also has an optional clinical track that prepares students for social work licensure.

“We’re honored that two independent organizations have recognized the exceptional quality of Colby-Sawyer’s MSW program,” said Turcotte. “These rankings affirm our commitment to preparing compassionate, skilled social workers who are ready to make a difference in their communities. It’s rewarding to see our faculty’s dedication and our students’ success reflected in these national evaluations.”

Joy Lang ’25, MSW, said her experience at Colby-Sawyer was transformative.

“The MSW program has prepared me to work confidently in diverse settings, advocating for clients at both individual and systemic levels,” said Lang, who is a medical social worker. “I apply the knowledge and skills I gained in the program to support individuals navigating mental health concerns. This education has deepened my personal commitment to social justice, service and meaningful impact in the lives of those I serve.”

All the MSW faculty have research experience and hold or are pursuing a Ph.D. or DSW degree and clinical licensure.

The program is a candidate for accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education. Full accreditation is expected in early 2026, said Turcotte, so that all successful current and future students will earn an accredited MSW degree.
