For Sophie Pedro '26, Colby-Sawyer is 'more than a place'

Collaboration, altruism and making connections are themes of Sophie H. Pedro’s Colby-Sawyer Commencement speech titled "More Than a Place."

The speech written by the dean’s list student and women’s lacrosse team captain was chosen by the selection committee because it epitomizes the character of the graduating class and the Colby-Sawyer experience.

“I hope listeners walk away with the understanding and appreciation that while the world often encourages independence and self-focus, our stories are only possible because of each other,” said Pedro, who is earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in healthcare management.

Pedro’s story begins with family.

“I was raised to value connection, to show up for others and to never take those relationships for granted. It shaped how I built relationships, how I approached my teammates and classmates, and how I tried to show up in every part of this community,” said the resident of Scituate, Rhode Island.

“I’ve always tried to be someone who builds connections by getting to know others and recognizing that every interaction means something. I think that reflects who we are as a class.”

It certainly reflects who Pedro is.

This spring, she joined four classmates to complete a Capstone titled "Initiating Nursing Structured Planning and Implementation of Responsiveness to End-of-Life Care (INSPIRE)." Last summer, she was a student nurse extern in the hematology/oncology unit at Maine Medical Center.

Pedro’s leadership and all-for-one approach have produced impressive results. Last spring, she was selected to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Sportsmanship Team. This spring, the lacrosse team set a single-season record for program wins. She was also honored as a co-recipient of the Department of Athletics 2026 Champion of Character award.

“I can confidently say that I am a better person than when I first arrived,” she said. “I’ve gained not only the knowledge and confidence to care for others, but also a deeper understanding of myself and the impact I can have on those around me.”

Pedro is eager to begin her nursing career — the only one she's ever wanted — to care for people and make a meaningful difference in their lives. She’s also interested in coaching lacrosse to give back to a sport that has given her so much.

Her favorite Colby-Sawyer experiences include everyday occasions and making friends who will continue to share in the biggest days of her life. “Looking back, these moments are what made this place feel like home and what I’ll carry with me long after graduation,” she said.

While Pedro delivers her speech about connections, class accomplishments and the village that helped make it all happen, she hopes her peers reflect on the people who shaped their journeys.

“We’ve built a community where people truly want to be around each other,” she said. “That shared sense of connection is what truly represents us.”
