Leah Hodder-Romano

Yar

(This poem was inspired by a scene from The Philadelphia Story (1940) where Katharine Hepburn's character described a ship as "yar" and when asked to explain it, she said that it meant "easy to handle, quick to the helm, fast, true.")

Once ambitious,
Lost in tumultuous seas,
Cross eyed in the clouds
With the nerve of a child,

The love I had to give
Became deafening.
Alert and ravenous,
I blindfolded the inevitable.

Yet I have found my north star -
Wind at my back,
Dancing on every roll and pitch,
Heading fixed beyond the bowsprit.

I will fall with open lungs
Into the light you left burning
And cradle my trust in the hips
Of our voyage.

For you, I will be
Easy to handle,
Quick to the helm,
Fast, true.
