Evan Shaw

3rd Place:

God

God is a summer banquet where the food is laughter.
God is the songbird who whispers you awake.
God is a trampled flower a little girl puts in her hair.

God was busy knitting while your mother was pregnant.
God shatters the mirror I hold to hate myself with.
God weeps as a father hangs up the phone.

God clothes a river with a warm blanket of snow.
God tills the weeds of forgotten gardens.
God paints a sunrise with the junkie's last breath.

Evan Shaw recently attained a B.F.A. at Colby-Sawyer College with a concentration in Ceramics. Evan came to college with an interest in black and white film photography and music on the side, but quickly took to clay when he began hand-building vases and throwing various shapes on the wheel. During Evan's junior year, he lived abroad in Florence, Italy and practiced sketching, oil painting and creative writing in gardens, museums and cafes around the city. In his last year of school, Evan recorded and produced his own album using various instruments and voice and won a school-wide contest that had his poem printed on the colleges maple syrup bottles. He enjoys the sounds and rhythms of words and expresses them through his songs, poems and stories. Evan currently resides along a river in Andover N.H. where he can be found playing music and learning Ancient Hebrew which he believes is the original language of humans and was used by God to fashion together everything in creation.
