internships and careers

Learning On Campus…

At Colby-Sawyer, 100 percent of students complete an internship before graduating. Education minors and those pursuing teacher certification begin accumulating field-based experience at the end of their first year, and can explore many career options.

Colby-Sawyer's Windy Hill laboratory school provides students with opportunities to integrate classroom theory and real life experiences with toddlers and preschoolers in a state-of-the-art green facility under the supervision of master teachers.

…And Off Campus

In consultation with faculty, students select and apply for internships which best match their acquired knowledge of child development and their skills and interests. During their required senior-year internship, students gain intensive practical work experience and valuable professional contacts. In the past, student interns have:

  • Student-taught in pre-kindergarten to grade 3 in public schools
  • Assessed various roles in social service organizations
  • Shadowed professionals in early intervention programs
  • Student-taught in Head Start
  • Worked with children and families with special needs

Harrington Center for Career and Academic Advising

Students are encouraged to use the resources of the Harrington Center for Career and Academic Advising, where they can meet with a counselor to explore career options, internship opportunities and graduate schools.

Careers in Education

Graduates with New Hampshire Early Childhood teacher certification (N - 3) are qualified to work in New Hampshire Early Intervention Programs with children ages birth to 3 years and teach in New Hampshire public schools grades pre-kindergarten through grade 3. Qualifications for teacher certification and working in early intervention are established by state agencies (i.e. New Hampshire Department of Education and the New Hampshire Department of Public Health). Students interested in working with young children outside of New Hampshire are encouraged to contact the appropriate state agency in their states to learn about qualification requirements.

Graduate School
