My Colby-Sawyer Experience

“The work load increased the second year, which made the class more difficult than expected, but we all made it through.”
Kayt Racz, Communication Studies

Semester Break Opening Information
It is extremely important to remind your student to check in at the Thorton Living Room in Colgate Hall upon returning from the semester break between the hours of 9:00am and 2:00pm to receive a new student ID on Sunday, January 22. The new ID is necessary for students to have access to the residence halls. Classes will resume on Monday, January 23.

Financial Aid Reminder
It is nearly time to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2006-2007 academic year. The deadline for new student applications for the FAFSA is February 15, 2006, and the deadline for transfer or returning students is April 15, 2006. It is strongly recommended that families complete the FAFSA electronically. Electronic applications are processed more quickly than paper ones and applicants are prompted to correct errors while on-line. The web site is: www.FAFSA.ed.gov. Financial Aid Information

Student Satisfaction Inventory
On January 30, 2006, students campus-wide will be invited to participate in a Student Satisfaction Inventory sponsored by the office of College Relations. The Inventory enables institutions, such as Colby-Sawyer College, to strategically target the areas most in need of immediate improvement. It will aid in facillitating the development of planning priorities, and it will help the institution to examine student transactions with all of the major aspects of their college experience (academics, co-curricular activities, general services, etc.) Students will be offered incentives for participating in the survey, including a daily drawing to win $10 on the Smartcard account of their choice, as well as a grand prize drawing to win a free iPod.

Free Ski Pass!
Does your son or daughter love to hit the slopes? Colby-Sawyer students can present their college ID at Mount Sunapee guest services to receive a free season pass! They also receive a 10% discount at Okemo Mountain Resort. All beginner skiiers are also entitled to one free ski or snowboard lesson. Remind your student to take advantage of these great deals!

What to Expect This Spring
The Spring semester offers students various opportunities for change. Here are a few things you may notice your student experiencing in the coming months:

  • According to the Baird Health and Counseling Center, students who are sensitive to Seasonal Affect Disease (SAD) have symptoms starting in late January through April. Taking advantage of the sunlight during the daytime and installing special light bulbs in desk lamps and room lights can be helpful to them.
  • Spring semester moves at a faster pace. Students who may not have developed strong study habits in the fall may find themselves feeling overwhelmed. Encourage them to use the available resources, such as finding a tutor or visiting the Academic Development Center, early in the semester.
  • Establishing realistic expectations regarding communication between you and your son or daughter will be important because most students have developed strong friendships within the college community. Find a happy medium, and let them know you really enjoy hearing from them, and you value the time you spend talking.
  • For seniors, this is an especially stressful time. It is normal to hear seniors feel very unsure about their future. They are dealing with the inevitable separation from an environement they came to regard as their community. They will also be separating from an established support system. They may fear the unknown, but reassurance that you have confidence in them can help greatly.
