My Colby-Sawyer Experience

“I have learned the importance of understanding nature in creating manmade landscapes and how art involves politics, business, and economics, in addition to providing beauty and inspiration.”

December

After Thanksgiving break, classes began to inhabit everyone's lives once again. We had a month of our first semester left, and we all knew it would be jam packed with projects, tests, and papers. My group of friends and I finally began to figure out a schedule to go by everyday. We ate meals together, walked to class together, and spent whatever free time was available together. In order to feel comfortable at college, you must meet and make friends who you feel complete you. It's always important to have people to talk to about emotions, stressors, or whatever else is bothering you.

December was another very hectic time. Finals were coming and on top of massive amounts of studying, I had to pack up my room and prepare myself for a month long break. I remember the day before my computer final was due at 8am, all of New London lost electricity. Since the electricity was down, the internet was down, which I needed to complete my final. I couldn't get back online until the early hours of the morning, forcing me to stay up until 4 a.m. finishing up what should have been done earlier. I made a mistake, recognized it, and told myself it would never happen again. Believe it or not, I learned a lot from this experience. Even thought I got the project in on time, I learned that if you are given two weeks to do a project, you should never wait until the last minute because something may potentially happen, prohibiting you from finishing it. I'm glad it happened to me during my first semester at college, because I have learned to manage my time a lot better since then.

We also picked new courses for spring semester in December. My advisor helped me with this process. This was both exciting and difficult for me. I was so worried I would choose the wrong course or I would end up with a horrible schedule. I spent nights on end reading catalogs and looking at the times of classes to see if they would fit into a schedule or if they would overlap. I was so anxious and nervous to get my schedule. I found it difficult to choose my courses and I needed help figuring out what a lot of different letters and numbers meant regarding classes. The beginning of the month also brought the Winter Semiformal. It was fun to get dressed up and go dancing with all my friends.

December Tips

  • Like Thanksgiving break, the freedom rule is still in effect. We're home for a month this time. We understand we must work, but play time is important too.

  • Its okay to tell us you can't wait for us to come home.

  • Finals are here. We're stressed out. Give us space and don't get too mad if we say something harsh. We'll apologize later. Lack of sleep has caused us to be cranky.
