Colby-Sawyer College Presents Theatre Festival of Short, Student-Written Plays

NEW LONDON, N.H., Oct. 24, 2006 — The Colby-Sawyer College Fine and Performing Arts Department will present S.N.A.F.U. REDUX, a festival of ten-minute plays mostly written, directed and performed by students.

S.N.A.F.U. REDUX will open Thursday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. at the Sawyer Fine Arts Center on campus. The festival will continue on Friday, Nov. 3, and Saturday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students/children and free with a Colby-Sawyer I.D.

The students wrote the plays as part of their sophomore seminar, Catharsis: A Theatrical Journey, with Fine and Performing Arts Professor Jerry Bliss, which they completed in the last two spring semesters. Four of the plays will be directed by students, two students will direct their own plays, and one student will act in her own one-woman show. Professor Bliss will also direct his own 10-minute play.

“Fallen from Grace” tells the story of a pregnant teen's struggle to choose between keeping her unborn child or terminating her pregnancy. Written by Haley Ingraham '07 and directed by Jerry Bliss, the play features actors Hollie Quigley '07, Andrew Baker '08 and Dylan Zarett '09.

“Me: the Black and White Truth,” written by Alicia Harris '07 and directed by Professor Bliss, depicts the life of a young bi-racial woman, with Harris performing in this one-woman show.

The play “1:28,” written by Amanda Powell '07 and directed by Andrew Baker, takes place in the aftermath of a school shooting. It focuses on four characters who were present that day: the shooter, his best friend, his art teacher and the victim's girlfriend. As they await questioning at the police station, the characters explore their thoughts and feelings through monologues. The play features actors Angela Doyle '10, Jesse Lundberg '08, Kerri Morrison '08, Robert Wardwell '08 and Alex Azodi '10.

Ashley Goulter '08 is the playwright and director of “Live Life as You Want,” a play about a lesbian couple, Eva and Marci. Eva is pregnant from her relationship with a former boyfriend, Peter. Marci is trying to convince Eva that an abortion is the right thing to do while Peter urges her to continue her pregnancy. The cast includes Kristiina DiGesu '09, Margaret McCarthy '10, Robert Wardwell and Molly Mullen '08.

In “The Moon,” written and directed by Jerry Bliss, the disappearance of the moon causes a commotion for some important people. The play features the cast of Rob Wardwell, Andrew Baker, Margaret McCarthy, Vivienne Brand '09 and Jesse Lundberg.

“Common Ground,” written by Sarah Hayes '08 and directed by Hollie Quigley, features the cast including Craig Ferriera '07, Zach Cranor '07, Sarah Hayes, Jillian Whitney '09, Vivienne Brand and Alex Azodi. “3,2,1…..Action” is written and directed by Beth Auger '07, with actors Hollie Quigley and Zach Cranor.
