NEW LONDON, N.H., March 22, 2011 – Colby-Sawyer College senior Danielle Shannon (Conway, N.H.) and junior Shawn Dunstan (Sinking Spring, Pa.) have earned a trip to the 2011 U.S. Alpine National Championships, held at Winter Park Resort in Winter Park, Colo., from March 31 to April 3.

Dunstan and Shannon will compete in the giant slalom on March 31 and April 1 respectively, and both student-athletes will hit the hill on April 3 for the slalom competition. View the full schedule of events here.

Shannon and Dunstan competed earlier this month in the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) National Championships in Sun Valley, Idaho. Shannon placed second in the giant slalom and slalom events en route to winning the overall combined National Championship. She beat all competitors in the overall standings and was the top American, resulting in a trip to U.S. Nationals. Shannon also earned First Team All-American selections in giant slalom, slalom, and combined for her efforts.

Colby-Sawyer junior Shawn Dunstan (Sinking Spring, Pa.) will compete in his second straight U.S. Alpine National Championships after finishing as the top American male at the USCSA National Championships. Dunstan finished ninth in the giant slalom, followed by a fourth place in the slalom. He finished fourth in the overall combined standings and emerged as the top American to earn a bid to compete at U.S. Nationals.

Two years ago, Shannon dominated the field in the giant slalom at the USCSA National Championships held at Winter Park Resort. She won the event easily, besting her nearest competitor by 3.59 seconds. In the slalom event, Shannon placed fifth out of 95 racers. 2011 will mark the third straight year that Shannon has earned the right to compete against the best skiers in North America.

Shawn Dunstan will compete in his second straight U.S. Alpine National Championships after finishing as the top American male at the USCSA National Championships. Dunstan finished ninth in the giant slalom, followed by a fourth place in the slalom. He finished fourth in the overall combined standings and emerged as the top American to earn a bid to compete at U.S. Nationals. Dunstan earned First Team All-American honors in the slalom and combined, in addition to Second Team All-American accolades in giant slalom.

Dunstan, who in 2010 became the first Colby-Sawyer male skier to compete at Nationals, will look to repeat the success he garnered at Winter Park in 2009. Dunstan and the rest of the Colby-Sawyer men's alpine ski team won the USCSA National Championship that year.
