NEW LONDON, N.H., Nov. 6, 2006 Colby Sawyer College will host virtuoso Indian musician Shafaatullah Khan, who has mesmerized audiences worldwide with the sounds of the sitar for more than 20 years.
Shafaatullah Khan will perform on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m., in Wheeler Hall at the Ware Campus Center. Admission is free and open to the public.
A descendent of one of India's most respected and renowned musical families, Kahn's repertoire includes two classic Indian stringed instruments, the sitar and surbahar, as well as the tabla, a pair of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres. The Washington Post reported that Khan explored the rhythmic intricacies of percussive sound in a way that was both intellectual and poetic and described his performances as virtuoso with a classical purity and astonishing individuality.
Kahn debuted at the age of 11 with a performance for the Queen of England. He has subsequently performed at such prestigious venues as the Acropolis in Athens, Royal Albert Hall in London, The Great Hall of the Kremlin, in Moscow, the Lincoln Center in New York and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. He has conducted workshops led lecture-demonstrations at college campuses throughout the country, including Harvard University, UCLA, Haverford College and University of New Hampshire. Kahn has also been an Artist-in-Residence at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., for two years.
