NEW LONDON, N.H., Jan. 12, 2006 - Colby Sawyer College will host one of New England's premier African dance bands, Rumbafrica. Winner of the 1995 Boston Music Awards “Outstanding World Music Act,” Rumbafrica has fashioned a sound of their own based on the popular Soukous style of music from Central Africa.

Rumbafrica will perform on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 8 p.m., in the Sawyer Fine Arts Center. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and free with a Colby-Sawyer College ID. Tickets may be reserved at the Sawyer Center box office by calling (603) 526-3670 or purchased at the door.

Sharing in the rich diversity that the African cultures offer the world, Rumbafrica presents music and dance from Congo. Under the leadership of Tshibangu Kadima Rumbafrica performs the sweet vocal harmonies and lilting dance rhythms of classic Congolese rumba, in harmony with the cranking non-stop beat of modern Soukous guitar. Traditional dancing, percussion breakdowns and guitar theatrics are all part of the show. Alan Waters of The Boston Phoenix calls Rumbafrica “Boston's premier African dance band,” and “a mainstay of the world-music scene.”

Soukous is a style of music that originated in the Congo during the 1930s and early 1940s. Based on traditional Congolese music, today's Soukous has been influenced by Cuban/Caribbean rhythms and early American country music.

This event is sponsored by the Colby-Sawyer College Cultural Events Committee.
