Colby-Sawyer College Hosts 2006 Reunion Weekend

NEW LONDON, N.H., May 23, 2006 – Colby-Sawyer will host its All-College Reunion, a weekend of events on the college's scenic New London campus. This year's reunion, which runs from June 2 through June 4, features three events that are open to area community members. The public is invited to participate in a tropical luau, the Reunion 5K run/walk and a presentation and reception in honor of Professor Emerita Hilary Cleveland's 50th year of teaching at Colby-Sawyer.

The Luau on the Lawn, a tropical dinner with entertainment by New England Noise, takes place on Friday, June 2, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the college quad. The Reunion 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, June 3, with registration at 8:30 a.m. at Lethbridge Lodge. Also on Saturday, Professor Emerita Hilary Cleveland will present a lecture and discussion of “American Women Who Have Made a Difference” at 1 p.m. in the Cleveland Colby Colgate Archives. A reception recognizing Professor Cleveland's contributions to the college will follow.

Friday's reunion events will also include a young alumni golf outing, walking and van tours of the campus, and an introduction to rock climbing on the Ray Climbing Wall. The afternoon activities will feature courses such as “Tools of the Trade: Geographic Information Systems,” offered by Professor John Callewaert, director of the college's Institute for Community and Environment.

Alumnae Maura Brady '02 and Sandra Mitchell '02 will present “Baubles and Beads,” a bead- and jewelry-making workshop, while Associate Professor of Natural Sciences LaVonne Batalden will lead an exploration of “The Nature of Chocolate,” which will include taste-testing. Other opening day events include a faculty and student art exhibition and several reunion class parties.

Saturday's events begin with a breakfast buffet and the Reunion 5K Fun Run/Walk, sponsored by the class of 2001 in honor of their friend, Jason Schreck '02, who was seriously injured in a ski accident in March. All proceeds will benefit the class of 2001 scholarship gift in Schreck's name. One of the course offerings includes a discussion of “Democracy in the Middle East” led by community member Charles A. Kennedy, a professor emeritus of religion at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

A popular reunion event, “The World of Wine,” will be hosted by Frederico Durán and Bill Tighe of the Lake Sunapee Wine Society, and allows alumni to taste and learn about fine wines from around the world. Other events will include the reunion barbecue, a “State of the College” presentation by Anne Winton Black '73, '75, chairman of the Board of Trustees, and the college's senior staff, and a variety of evening receptions, banquets and dance parties.

On the final day of reunion, Sunday, June 4, alumni and friends from around the country will come together for “A Gathering for Remembrance” to celebrate the camaraderie of the Colby-Sawyer family and to remember their deceased classmates.

“We craft our reunion program to appeal to alumni of all ages and their families, as well as to engage residents in our local area in the life of the college,” says Gaye LaCasce, director of Alumni Relations. “It's a chance for alumni to reconnect with their classmates, faculty and staff and to experience the amazing transformations that have taken place on campus since their graduation. Reunion also enables us to celebrate our close ties to the community by involving area residents in some of our major events.”

Registration for the reunion run/walk requires a $10 entry fee and includes a race T-shirt. Tickets to the Luau on the Lawn are $18. For more information about Colby-Sawyer's All-Campus Reunion 2006, visit the Reunion Web site or call the Alumni Office at (603) 526-3727.
