NEW LONDON, N.H., Jan. 24, 2006 Colby-Sawyer College hosts a one-man dramatic presentation, Reflections, in which Jim Lucas re-creates the words and visions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. With a physical resemblance that has been called uncanny, Lucas brings to life Dr. King's I have a Dream speech, his Letter from Birmingham Jail, and other speeches and letters by the slain civil rights leader.
Lucas will present Reflections on Monday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. in Clements Hall in the Curtis L. Ivey Science Center. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the Cultural Events Committee.
Lucas is an advocate of King's philosophy of non-violent civil action to affect social change. A nationally recognized performer, he uses his theatrical talents to inspire people, creating energy and passion that have left a lasting impression on audiences across the country. He has performed at many colleges and has been a guest speaker at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and National Baptist Conventions.
While advocating for an official holiday in King's name in the mid-1980s, Lucas came to believe that someone needed to bring the Reverend's words to life after his death. He began memorizing and reciting parts of King's speeches, and people encouraged him to create an entire performance based on King's words. Lucas expresses his goal by quoting one of Dr. King's favorite songs: If I can help somebody as I pass along, if I could cheer somebody with a word or a song, if I could show somebody that he's traveling wrong, then my living will not be in vain.
