Colby-Sawyer College Shows the ABC's of Helping Those in Need Through the Annual ABC Quilt Project

NEW LONDON, N.H., March 11, 2004 – Colby-Sawyer College will host the annual ABC Quilt Project to benefit at-risk babies born HIV-positive, abandoned or affected by drug or alcohol abuse. Several volunteers from the college and surrounding areas create numerous quilts, which are sent to hospitals throughout the United States and in other countries.

The ABC Quilt Project will be held on Wednesday, April 14, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Wheeler Hall at the Ware Campus Center.

Colby-Sawyer students, faculty and staff, as well as many New London area community members, gather materials and handcraft quilts for the children. These volunteers buy, wash and pin the fabric while others cut, sew or knot the quilts.

Liz Reinecker '05, Colby-Sawyer Community Service Club president, is one of the many students running the project in its 14th year at the college. Last year, with the help of around 200 volunteers, approximately 65 quilts were produced.

For those who do not know how to sew, there are plenty of other things volunteers can do to help, according to Reinecker. They can organize materials prior to the event or simply lend their sewing machine for the day. She states, “The Quilt Project is a perfect opportunity to take your mind off of all the work and responsibilities of every day life and truly show your care and concern for others.”

The project, founded in 1988 by Ellen Ahlgren in Northwood, N.H., stands for “At-Risk Babies Crib” Quilts. More than a quarter million quilts to date are made and distributed in the United States and other countries such as Russia, Chile, Puerto Rico and Romania.
