NEW LONDON, N.H., Sept. 19, 2006 Colby Sawyer College will host MuscleBound, New York artist and playwright Michael Feldman's one-man show about the growing number of men with body image disorders. The presentation paints a sharp, detailed picture of men with these disorders, exploring what drives them, what scares them and why they hide their issues.
MuscleBound! will be presented at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, in Wheeler Hall in the Ware Campus center. The event is open to the public, and admission is free.
How far would you go to have the body you've always dreamed of? MuscleBound! , Feldman's second full-length show, uses both live performance art and filmed interviews to follow the lives of three men who alter their bodies in different and destructive ways over the course of one year. The men include Josh, a 19-year-old gay male who is an exercise bulimic who binges and then purges through exercise; Jim, a muscular trainer who secretly takes steroids; and Nicholas, a filmmaker who, in documenting gym culture, falls victim to the disorders he seeks to expose.
In a courageous move, Feldman appears in documentary clips and tells the audience of his own personal battle with eating disorders and exercise bulimia. Added to the film are advertising clips celebrating the Adonis-like ideal male image and a fictional reality show, America's Next Top Stud-Muffin.
I was wholly blown away! Simply amazing! says Kathleen MacDonald of the F.R.E.E.D. Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating eating disorders. Daring and brutally honest. Few people are saying the things he says so boldly, according to Dr. Ira Sacker, founder of the HEED Foundation to end eating disorders. This event is sponsored by the Cultural Events Committee.
