Festival of Lights Features Video Productions
By Communication Studies Students

NEW LONDON, N.H., April 30, 2004 – The Colby-Sawyer College Communication Studies Program will present the Festival of Lights, an annual exhibition of students' year-end video projects and senior video capstone projects. Among those premiering is senior Krista Lind's video on the Colby-Sawyer Community Service Club's Alternative Spring Break trip to Florida to work with Habitat for Humanity and senior Lauren Kovach's video documenting the history of Blaisdell Lake.

The event will be held on Friday, May 7, at 7 p.m. in Wheeler Hall at Colby- Sawyer's Ware Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public.

The festival showcases the work of students in video production classes over the past semester. This year's event marks the 25th installment of "Colby-Sawyer Insights," an annual video news magazine produced by the Video I class. Stories featured on "Insights" will include, "The Economics of Textbook Buying," "Effects of the War on the Campus Community," "The Myth of the Freshman 15," "Possibility of a Campus Pub," and "Sexual Activity on Campus," as well as a feature on the construction of the new Curtis L. Ivey Science Center.

The second part of the evening is reserved for the senior video capstone presentations. "This is an opportunity to showcase what our senior video students have done in and for the community," said Humanities Professor Don Coonley.

Senior Krista Lind will present a video documenting this year's Alternative Spring Break entitled "Building a Community: CSC Alternative Spring Break." She traveled with the Community Service Club to Clay County, Florida, where the students worked on projects for Habitat for Humanity.

Lind's project will be used by the Community Service Club to promote future participation and to help with fund raising. "This is a really visual subject. I know it's going to be a great tool for the Community Service Club in organizing and gaining support for future events," Lind said.

Senior Lauren Kovach's capstone hits a little closer to home. She has been working since September with the Sutton Historical Society making a video called "Blaisdell Lake: History of a Lake Community." Kovach was excited about the connections she has made with the local community and the opportunity to give something back.

Other senior capstones that will be presented on May 7 include "Kid's Café," produced by Kendra Seavey. Seavey's video is for the Manchester, N.H., chapter of the Salvation Army, and illustrates the service of free, healthy meals that they provide for area youth each week.

Seniors Stephanie Hicks and Nina Lavigne are working in conjunction with the Colby-Sawyer Admissions Office to create two separate, but complementary videos focusing on different aspects of campus life. Hick's video, "Discovering Colby-Sawyer: The Classroom Experience," gives an inside look at what it means to go to class at Colby-Sawyer. Lavigne's feature, "Colby-Sawyer College: Learning Among Friends," portrays life outside of class at Colby-Sawyer. Both Hick's and Lavigne's videos will be posted on the Colby-Sawyer Web site for any interested student to preview.

Also working with a campus organization is senior Mike Ricker. Ricker has produced a feature on fire safety awareness for the Campus Safety Department. "Dormitory Fire Safety" addresses the many fire safety concerns that are ever present on a college campus. Additionally, senior Laura Palma's capstone project will focus on the Newport, N.H., Headstart Program in "Newport Headstart: A Look Behind the Scenes."

"I'm always excited to have people look at the art these students have created," said Coonley, "It is also great for the students to experience the feedback of a large audience."
