NEW LONDON, N.H., March 20, 2006 - The Departments of Athletics & Exercise and Sport Sciences at Colby-Sawyer College will host the annual Athletics & Exercise and Sport Sciences Symposium. This year's symposium explores issues and perspectives about coaching. Presentations include Coaching to Develop Outstanding Athletes and Young Adults, by Larry Lauer, Applying Mechanics to Coaching, by Jerry Wilkerson, Heat and Hydration Issues in Youth and Adolescent Athletes, by Douglas Casa, and Professional Growth for Interscholastic Coaches, by Jerry Reeder.
The symposium will be held on Monday, April 10, at Wheeler Hall in the Ware Campus Center. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with lectures starting at 8:30 a.m. The lectures are free and open to the public. A luncheon buffet will be offered for $15 for professionals, $10 for students and seniors.
Larry Lauer, who will present Coaching to Develop Outstanding Athletes and Young Adults, is the director of coaching education and development at the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports at Michigan State University. He works closely with the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) to conduct quality coaching education programs, train and supervise program instructors, evaluate program effectiveness, and develop curricular materials. He is a coaching educator for USA Hockey, USA Tennis, and the MHSAA. In his Championship Performance Consulting business, he has worked with youth to professional athletes and Division I college teams.
Applying Mechanics to Coaching will be presented by Jerry Wilkerson, the executive associate dean of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Indiana University. Wilkerson's teaching/coaching experience led her to study sport techniques and fundamental movement. She is the co-author of The Teaching of Team Sports: A Coeducational Approach, and has more than 50 other publications in professional literature. She is a former chair of the Kinesiology Academy of American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD), a fellow in AAHPERD's Research Consortium, and an editorial board member and reviewer for nine professional periodicals in her field of study.
Douglas Casa, the athletic training education program director, as well as associate professor and research associate, at the University of Connecticut, will present Heat and Hydration Issues in Youth and Adolescent Athletes. Among Casa's professional interests are dehydration, rehydration and heat illnesses related to exertion. He has served on the medical staff of several races including the Boston Marathon, the New York City Marathon, and the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon. He currently serves on the National Athletic Trainers' Association Pronouncements Committee, as associate editor for the Journal of Athletic Training, and on the American College of Sports Medicine Medical Education Committee.
Jerry Reeder will conclude the day's sessions with Professional Growth for Interscholastic Coaches. Reeder is a program consultant for the American Sport Education Program (ASEP) in Champaign, Ill. He works with individual state high school associations and national sport organizations in implementing ASEP's professional-level coaching education program to credential high school coaches. Reeder has been an ASEP coaching principles, a sport first-aid course instructor, and an ASEP national faculty member. He was recently recognized by the American Baseball Coaches Association for his 25 years of coaching.
