NEW LONDON, N.H., March 8, 2006 Colby-Sawyer College will present Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, a film documenting one of the greatest business scandals in history. Based on the book of the same name written by Fortune reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, the documentary reveals the almost unimaginable personal excesses of the Enron hierarchy.
The film will be presented on Monday, March 27, at 7 p.m. in Wheeler Hall, Ware Campus Center. Admission is free.
Director Alex Gibney features insider accounts and incendiary corporate audio and videotapes to reveal how greed toppled Enron, which once was the seventh-largest company in the country. In his documentary, Gibney talks with several former Enron employees about the corruption. He weaves audio and video recordings to illustrate scandals, such as company instructions to shut down a major power station in the midst of the California energy crisis. The orders artificially reduced the energy supply and increased its price.
This documentary doesn't just follow the story of a few powerful and deceitful people, but illustrates that the same situation can happen anywhere. The perpetrators were not faceless corporations but simply people determined to succeed, regardless of the costs.
This event is sponsored by Colby-Sawyer College's Cultural Events Committee.
