emergency preparedness

April 19, 2007

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
The tragic events that occurred on the campus of Virginia Tech are truly shocking and remind us of the importance of caring for our own community. Over the last several days I have received a number of calls from individuals both on and off campus seeking information about our own emergency response plans.

Colby-Sawyer College has devoted considerable time and resources to establish a comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (EMP) that will guide decision making, communication, and coordination of response activities in the event of an emergency. The fine tuning and testing of the plan is ongoing and involves many constituencies both on and off campus.

The purpose of the plan is to provide information that will save lives during emergencies and expedite the resumption of normal CSC operations after these events. Using an “all hazards” approach, the EMP outlines procedures for responding to and recovering from a variety of emergency and disaster situations including hostile intruder, bomb threats, fires, dangerous weather conditions, hazardous material spills and medical emergencies.

All CSC community members can access the EMP and other emergency preparedness material through Blackboard. In addition to the plan there are emergency response guidelines posted in all classrooms and conference rooms as well as our Web site. We urge you to visit the site and familiarize yourself with the procedures in place.

While the EMP helps us create a climate of preparedness, ultimately our personal safety is predicated on the choices that we make everyday. We must continue to work together to ensure the health and safety of all our community members.

Stay Safe,

Pete Berthiaume
