NEW LONDON, N.H., Feb. 10, 2006 A Prohibition-era, whiskey-running adventure will light up the silver screen when filmmaker Jay Craven visits Colby-Sawyer College on Monday, March 6. Craven will screen his film, Disappearances, and field questions and talk about his work.
This event will be held at 7 p.m. in Wheeler Hall in the Ware Campus Center. The event is open to the public and admission is free.
Disappearances is both a comedy and drama. Adapted from an award-winning novel by Vermont author Howard Frank Mosher, the film is the story of Quebec Bill Bonhomme (played by Kris Kristofferson), a blue-collar worker who is desperate to raise money so that he can keep his cattle herd alive through the rapidly approaching harsh winter. Bonhomme decides to resort to whiskey-smuggling, a traditional family occupation, and he takes his son, Wild Bill, on this dangerous endeavor. Joining the father and son team are Henry Coville and Rat Kinneson, both experienced whiskey runners. Together they cross the border into the vast reaches of the Canadian wilderness for four unforgettable days "full of terror, full of wonder."
The Washington Post said the film revives the tall tale with remarkable grace and intelligence. In its comedy, dark fantasy, and outrageous characters, Disappearances is delightful, but its success is rarer and more lasting than that."
The film is the final installment of a trilogy based on Mosher's works. Kingdom County Productions, a non-profit production company that was founded by Craven and Bess O'Brien, has produced all three of the adaptations of Mosher's work (Where the Rivers Flow North and A Stranger in the Kingdom). Along with running his production company, teaching, writing and directing, Craven runs a youth filmmaker's institution.
This event is sponsored by the Department of Humanities and the Cultural Events Committee.
