by Amber Cronin '10
NEW LONDON, N.H. - Colby-Sawyer College will host an arts and crafts fair featuring the work of 50 local craftspeople, along with the Empty Bowls Project, an effort to raise awareness about world hunger through the sale of students' hand-thrown ceramic bowls.
The events, which are open to the public, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on The Quad in the center of the Colby-Sawyer College campus. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.
The fair will feature local craftspeople, including students, faculty and staff at the college, who will sell handmade products such as jewelry, handspun yarn and knit goods, pottery, stained glass and photography. In addition to the local artisans, several student clubs will also offer various products and services for sale to raise funds for their club activities.
The Empty Bowls Project is run by a group of college community members who seek to raise awareness of world hunger. The group sells and serves small meals in hand-made bowls; the empty bowls serve as a reminder of the hunger in the world. The bowls were made by Colby-Sawyer Professor Jon Keenan's ceramics students. Additionally, Professor Nick Baer and a group of Environmental Studies students will press cider for sampling from noon until 3 p.m. A variety of other activities will also take place, including music, caricature drawings and airbrushed t-shirts.
These activities are part of Family Weekend 2008 at Colby-Sawyer College, which begins on Friday, Oct. 10 and concludes Sunday, Oct. 12.
