N.H. College & University Presidents Support Supreme Court Decision On Affirmative Action in Admissions

CONCORD, N.H., June 24, 2003 – The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision re-affirming that colleges and universities can consider race as one factor among many in making admission decisions is welcomed by the New Hampshire College & University Council Presidents. The Presidents believe the Court’s ruling is a significant statement and affirmation on the legality of affirmative action, and it will assist all higher education institutions in ensuring both a diverse student population and fairness to every applicant in the admission process.

“Diversity on our college campuses, like diversity in our nation’s communities, is a cornerstone upon which opportunity and equality is built. Ensuring diverse campuses prepares students for a diverse workplace and, at the same time, provides opportunities for all students to learn and grow both intellectually and culturally,” stated Thomas R. Horgan, Executive Director of the NHCUC.

“Our member institutions are challenged by New Hampshire’s relatively small minority population to provide diverse learning environments for our students. Allowing race to be among one of many factors in weighing a student’s application is essential to offering balanced educational experiences to all academically qualified students regardless of their race,” Horgan concluded.

Each NHCUC member institution will make its own statement reflecting on the Court’s recent ruling, but collectively the NHCUC colleges and universities are pleased that the Court has affirmed the constitutionality of affirmative action programs in higher education, and believe that the benefits of diversity embraces the entire student population.

The NHCUC member institutions include the following: Chester College of New England, Colby-Sawyer College, College for Lifelong Learning, Daniel Webster College, Dartmouth College, Franklin Pierce College, Keene State College, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, New England College, Plymouth State College, Rivier College, Saint Anselm College, Southern New Hampshire University, and University of New Hampshire.
