NEW LONDON, N.H., Aug. 28, 2006 Colby- Sawyer College will continue its Human Rights and Social Justice Film Series this fall. This semester's films highlight two women fleeing Taliban-controlled Kandahar; the political and humanitarian crisis in Darfur; and a young girl's efforts to help her mother and grandmother survive in Afghanistan.
The Human Rights Film Series is sponsored by the Colby-Sawyer College Cultural Events Committee. The events are free and open to the public and will be held in Clements Hall in the Curtis L. Ivey Science Center.
The film series starts with Kandahar on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. Inspired by real-life experiences, this politically urgent story follows a young female journalist named Nafas who escapes Afghanistan with her family but must return in an attempt to rescue her injured sister. Nafas disguises herself as an Afghan wife by wearing the traditional burka in order to find her sister in Kandahar.
The second film of the series, Darfur Diaries, will be shown on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. Independent filmmakers Aisha Bain, Jen Marlowe and Adam Shapiro have created a platform for the people of Darfur to speak for themselves about their experiences, fears and hopes for the future. The conflict in Darfur serves as an ongoing narrative for the film, but the focus is on the people who are living through what has been called genocide. Through the voices of refugees, displaced persons, and in particular, women and children, this film seeks to provide space for the marginalized victims of atrocities to speak and engage with the world.
The final film for the fall series, Osama, will be shown Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. The film tells the story of three generations of women deeply affected by the advent of the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan. A 12-year-old girl whose father and brother have died must disguise herself as a boy to help her mother and grandmother survive by working in a culture hostile to women. The girl embarks on a terrifying and confusing journey as she tries to keep the Taliban from finding out her true identity.
