New Partnership Adds to Colby-Sawyer's Academic and Study Away Options

Colby-Sawyer College has partnered with Florida Atlantic University (FAU) for a new domestic study away option in Boca Raton, on the southeast coast of Florida.

Starting in January 2014, Colby-Sawyer students who are accepted to FAU will have the opportunity to spend a semester outside of New London in a different climate and educational setting that will enrich their college experience both academically and culturally. Credits earned during study at FAU will appear as Colby-Sawyer College credits.

Colby-Sawyer will, in turn, welcome FAU students to spend a semester in the Northeast and take advantage of opportunities in the region. “Florida Atlantic told us they are interested in their students coming to Colby-Sawyer because Boca Raton is urban, fairly diverse, and their students would be attracted to the opportunity to study in New England,” said Academic Dean Burton Kirkwood, who has been involved with the partnership since its creation.

Students are encouraged to contact Harrington Center for Experiential Learning for Career and Academic Advising Director Kathy Taylor about applying to study in Florida. “We are ready to see students move between New London and Boca Raton,” said Dean Kirkwood.

Colby-Sawyer students have long enjoyed access to other study-away partnerships in a variety of locations. The Washington Internship Institute (WII) offers a metropolitan experience for students who seek long-term internship opportunities, and for the past decade, Colby-Sawyer students have interned in WII's Embassy and Diplomatic Scholars Program, the Go Green Program and the Capital Experience Program.

Other study away partners include Harlaxton College in Grantham, England, and The School for Field Studies, which has locations in Australia, Costa Rica, Kenya, Mexico and Turks & Caicos. Colby-Sawyer also works with Academic Programs International, American Institute of Foreign Study, Center for International Studies, The Education Abroad Network and Council on International Education Exchange to make study abroad possible in dozens of countries.

Beyond study away partnerships, well-established affiliation agreements with Plymouth State University (PSU) and Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., assist qualified Colby-Sawyer baccalaureate degree graduates with admission into their master's degree programs. At PSU, qualified students may complete master's degrees (M.Ed., M.A.T., M.B.A. or M.S.), teacher certification programs, or post- baccalaureate programs that provide New Hampshire licensure in Secondary Education. At Springfield College, students may pursue advanced work in: clinical mental health counseling, industrial/ organizational psychology, marriage and family therapy, school guidance counseling and student personnel administration, athletic training, exercise physiology, health promotion and disease prevention, clinical exercise physiology track, sport and exercise psychology, strength and conditioning and athletic counseling.
