Colby-Sawyer College to Host Presentation by Author of The Zen of Listening, Rebecca Shafir

NEW LONDON, N.H., Nov. 7, 2007 – Colby-Sawyer College will host a presentation by Rebecca Shafir, author of the award-winning and best-selling book The Zen of Listening: Mindful Communication in the Age of Distraction.

Shafir is a Boston-based speech pathologist and communication consultant who has coached political candidates, television and radio personalities and other professional speakers since 1980. She is currently in private practice at the Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health in Andover and Sudbury, Massachusetts.

The presentation begins Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in Clements Hall at the Curtis L. Ivey Science Center. Community members are invited to attend and admission is free.

In The Zen of Listening, published in 2000, Shafir explains that poor communication are caused by the distractions of contemporary life, and that good listening skills can be attained by using the mind and the body in concert. The book also emphasizes the usefulness of meditation as means to practice and achieve better speaking skills and mindful listening.

Shafir was previously the chief speech pathologist in Burlington, Mass., and has been a guest on radio and television who speaks about her insights on improving communication and on training people to motivate audiences.
