Colby-Sawyer College Hosts Senior Art Exhibition

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Fine and Performing Arts Department at Colby-Sawyer College will host an opening reception for the Senior Art Exhibition on Friday, April 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Marian Graves Mugar Art Gallery in Sawyer Center. The reception will include the presentation of scholarships and awards. Refreshments will be served, and the free event is open to the public.

The Senior Art Exhibition features more than 150 works of 14 Colby-Sawyer Art and Graphic Design majors in a variety of media including painting, drawing, ceramics, graphic design, and sculpture. The exhibition continues through May 10. (The gallery is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

The exhibition features the best career work of all senior Art and Graphic Design majors. The Presidential Purchase Award will be presented to an artist or graphic designer whose work will become part of the college's permanent collection. The Susan C. Harp Memorial Purchase Award will recognize excellence in graphic design, and that work will join the permanent collection as well.

“This year we have a large group of 10 graphic designers, and I am very excited to see the excellence in the presentation of their works,” said Rebekah Tolley, director of the art gallery. “In the past we used portfolios on tables to display their entries, but this year the students were encouraged to frame their works instead. I think this format results in much better exposure of their works and their skills to prospective employers. In addition to works on the wall, there are some very strong sculptural works and exceptional large ceramic pieces.”

Seniors whose work is featured in this year's exhibition include Sarah Heaney, Allison Hatch, Kevin Smith, Jacob Palmer, Charles Belvin, Justin Jaskiewicz, Jesse Lundberg, Jamie Messier, Courtney Bodine, Kelly DeCharles, Lawrence Whalen, Thomas McCahill, Stacy Rus, and Jessica Hentz. Many of the pieces exhibited in the show are for sale, with prices ranging from $25 for small framed graphic design pieces up to $450 for larger paintings and ceramics.

“This exhibition represents a somewhat smaller (in comparison to past years), but very well- organized, class of seniors who worked hard together to make a fine presentation of their works,” Tolley said.
