Colby-Sawyer College Appoints Two New Trustees
NEW LONDON, N.H., Dec. 21, 2012 – Colby-Sawyer College announces the appointment of William “Jay” J. Wilson and Peter “Pete” F. Volanakis to its Board of Trustees.
Wilson, who resides in New London, N.H., and Fairfield, Conn., owns and operates Wilson Connexions LLC, a consulting group focused on securing capital for startup or early stage companies. He is also a founding partner and chairman of Cambiar LLC, which provides management consulting services to market research companies in the U.S. and abroad.
Volanakis, a resident of Hanover, N.H., and Penn Yan, N.Y., retired as president of Corning Incorporated in 2010 after a 28-year career there in which he held many commercial and business development positions. He currently serves as a director of the SPX Corporation and the Vanguard Group and as a trustee of Vanguard Mutual Funds.
Colby-Sawyer President Thomas C. Galligan Jr. expressed enthusiasm about the experience, knowledge and perspective that Volanakis and Wilson will bring to the Board of Trustees. “They will make an already strong board so much stronger,” he said. “I am excited to work with them as we implement our strategic plan to make a great college even greater.”
Board of Trustees Chair Thomas C. Csatari also welcomes the broad expertise and experience the new trustees will share as part of their leadership roles with the Colby-Sawyer College community. “We are fortunate that these two extraordinary corporate leaders understand the critical role of higher education in our society today,” said Csatari, director of Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC, “and are committed to providing their support, vision and guidance to our innovative educational community.”
William J. Wilson earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University and a master's degree from Corpus Christi College in Cambridge, England. He has also pursued graduate work in European economic and political institutions at the University of Vienna.
Wilson is a member of the Board of Directors of Intersections Inc., a publicly held direct marketing company that offers credit, privacy protection and identity theft protection services to banks and consumers in the U.S. and abroad. He is also a board member of the Keller Fay Group, which measures the effects of online and offline conversations on consumer brands and services.
Additionally, Wilson serves on the board of the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at the University of Connecticut and is a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Advisors of the Master's in Market Research (MSMR) program at the University of Texas in Arlington. Previously, he served on the advisory boards of the MSMR program at the A.C. Nielsen Center for Market Research at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and the M.B.A .program at the Baruch College in New York.
In 2003, Wilson retired as executive chairman of NOP World, a division of United Business Media, and was responsible for global expansion of its market research business. Previously he served as chairman and CEO of Roper Starch Worldwide Inc., an international market research and consulting company; the executive vice president of International Research Associates, Inc.; and was employed by Reader's Digest in the U.S. and Europe.
Wilson has addressed various advertising and marketing groups and associations in the U.S., Europe and Asia, including the Advertising Research Foundation (ARF), and has authored numerous articles on marketing and media research. He was elected to the Market Research Council Hall of Fame in 2001, and in April 2003, he received the prestigious ARF Industry Leadership Award.
Peter F. Volanakis earned a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude in economics from Dartmouth College and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Tuck School at Dartmouth. Prior to returning to Dartmouth for his M.B.A., he spent three years in consumer products advertising with the Leo Burnett Company in Chicago. Volanakis is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Tuck School, the Advisory Board of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center and an emeritus director of the Corning Museum of Glass.
Volanakis's roles at Corning included managing director of Corning Germany; executive vice president of Siecor Corporation, a Corning equity venture; senior vice president of Advance Display Products, Life Sciences, Specialty Materials and Central Engineering; and president of Corning Technologies. In 2000, Volanakis joined the Corning Board of Directors and was named its chief operating officer in 2005 and as president in 2007. His service at Corning also included directorships of the Dow Corning Corporation, the Corning Foundation and the Corning Museum of Glass.
