Scholars and Leaders Honored at Colby-Sawyer College

NEW LONDON, N.H., April 27, 2007 – Colby-Sawyer College will host the Scholars and Leaders Reception Ceremony, an event that recognizes individuals and groups of students for their academic accomplishments, community service and leadership.

The event takes place on Tuesday, May 1, at 7 p.m., Wheeler Hall, Ware Campus Center and is open to the college community and students' families and friends.

Academic awards will be presented to students for their achievement within their areas of study, in their senior Capstone projects and in various academic honor societies. These awards include the James Duane Squires Book Award, which recognizes students' academic performance, and Sawyer Fellowships, which honors students' contributions to campus life in academic programs, fine and performing arts, as well as residential and co-curricular life.

Capstone Experience awards will honor students for excellence in their senior projects, in which they demonstrate their accumulated knowledge through their knowledge and actions. Baccalaureate Awards recognize individual students for their interest and excellence in each academic major.

Capstone and Baccalaureate awards will be presented in Business Administration, Exercise and Sport Sciences, Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, Humanities, Community and Environmental Studies, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences and Education.

The event will also honor students for their participation in academic honor societies, including Alpha Chi; Lamda Pi Eta; The Honor Society for Nursing; Psi Chi, the Honor Society in Psychology; and Sigma Beta Delta, the International Honor Society in Business, Management and Administration. Students who participate in Colby-Sawyer's Wesson Honors Program will also receive recognition.

The event also celebrates students for their leadership in various campus organizations and activities. Two seniors, a male and a female, will be recognized for distinction in leadership in the co-curricular life of the college through the Senior Achievement Awards.

The Key Association Award will honor a graduating senior who has demonstrated enthusiasm and pride in the college in his or her work with prospective students and their families. The Colby-Sawyer Award will be presented to the student who, in the opinion of the college's faculty, exemplifies Colby-Sawyer's ideals for personal dignity, intellectual growth, contribution to campus life and constructive influence on other students.

Students who have participated in the Leadership Expedition program, in which students are trained in many aspects of leadership, will also be recognized. The two students who were selected as Senior Commencement Speakers to represent the character of their class and to give inspirational and engaging speeches will be honored at the event.
