Colby-Sawyer College Hosts Juried Student Art Exhibition, Featuring 200 Works by 69 Artists

NEW LONDON, N.H., March 21, 2012 - Colby-Sawyer College's Fine and Performing Arts Department will host its 39th annual Gladys Greenbaum Meyers Juried Student Art Exhibition, displaying students' latest work in graphic design, ceramics, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, watercolor, painting, photography and integrated media.

The exhibition, one of the premiere events of the academic year, will open with a reception and awards ceremony on Friday, March 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Marian Graves Mugar Art Gallery of the Sawyer Fine Arts Center. The show is made possible through the generous endowment gift from the Class of 1939, established by alumna Gladys Greenbaum Meyers. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

The exhibition will boast around 200 pieces, chosen from entries submitted by 69 students. Any Colby-Sawyer student could enter his or her work in any medium, with a maximum of five entries per student. The Fine and Performing Arts faculty selected the pieces for the show based on their technical and expressive qualities.

In addition to the esteem of inclusion in a juried art exhibit, seven scholarships will be awarded to participating students. To receive these honors, returning students must have submitted the maximum five works in order to demonstrate the breadth of their skill. The Nancy Pierce Williams Scholarship Fund, the Charlotte Cobb Stahl '51 Scholarship Fund, and the Edith B. Long Scholarship Fund allowed for these scholastic awards through their donations.

As Gallery Director and Fine and Performing Arts Professor Loretta Barnett explains, “The Fine and Performing Arts Department is grateful for the support these scholarships provide for talented Colby-Sawyer artists.” Student artists also have the chance of winning Best in Show, Second Place and Third Place awards that recognize the high quality of their work.

As a part of their class experience, students of the current Exhibition Foundations class hung and organized the show. The exhibit will run through April 13 and the gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
