Colby-Sawyer College to Host Lawyer Janet P. Judge's Presentation of "MySpace & Facebook: What You Need To Know"
NEW LONDON, N.H., Oct. 30, 2007 — Colby-Sawyer College will host lawyer Janet P. Judge as she presents "MySpace & Facebook: What You Need To Know" on Sunday, Nov., 11 at 7 p.m. in the Ware Campus Center.
This event, sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Athletic Department, is free and open to Colby-Sawyer students, faculty and staff.
Judge's presentation will address the issues of MySpace, Facebook, hazing and harassment. According to Mitch Capelle, Colby-Sawyer's sports information director, there has been increased discussion nationwide about pictures of team hazing incidents being posted on these and other photo-sharing websites. Judge will discuss how being a member of these social networking sites effects students both during their college career and after.
Janet P. Judge concentrates her practice on collegiate sports law and employment counseling at Sports Law Associates LLC. She brings her diverse athletic experiences and expertise in sports and employment law to the table when advising and representing colleges and universities on a wide variety of sports-related issues including program development, NCAA eligibility, infractions and certification, EADA compliance, contracts, pay equity, Title IX, harassment, hazing, academic fraud and athlete misconduct.
In addition to her law practice, Ms. Judge is also a frequent speaker and trainer at Division I, II & III colleges and universities and national (National Collegiate Athletic Association, Women's Basketball Coaches Association, American Hockey Coaches Association) and regional conferences (Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, America East Athletic Conference, Northern Sun Conference).
She is the co-author of the newly released NCAA Manual on Title IX and, with Dr. Christine Grant, authored the NCAA News bi-weekly column “Gender Equity Q & As”. Janet currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Committee to Visit the Department of Athletics at Harvard College and is a member of Harvard's NCAA Division I Athletics Certification Steering Committee. She is actively involved in the community through her work as a volunteer youth soccer and basketball coach, co-chair of the American Youth Soccer Organization's Region 1271 and as a Rebound Program mentor for teenagers who have been convicted of drug related crimes.
Ms. Judge is a graduate of Harvard/Radcliffe College where she was an eight-time varsity letter winner in soccer (captain, three national tournament appearances), basketball and track & field. After college, she served as an Assistant Director of Athletics at Harvard College and liaison in the Alumni Relations Office. She coached soccer and basketball at Simmons College while attending Boston University School of Law. Upon graduation, she served as law clerk for the Honorable Norman H. Stahl, United States Court of Appeals.
Ms. Judge is admitted to practice law before state and federal courts in both Maine and Massachusetts. She is included in the Best Lawyers in America in the area of sports law, was recently invited to address the Knight Commission in Washington D.C. on the issue of Gender Equity in Athletics, and will be presenting the legal side of hazing at the NCAA's upcoming Hazing Summit in January 2008.
