Around the World in One Night: Colby-Sawyer Hosts International Festival

Go on a world tour without having to buy plane tickets, apply for a visa or flash a passport.

Colby-Sawyer College will host its annual International Festival in celebration of its diverse student body, which includes 151 international students from 31 countries, on Friday, Feb. 21, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Wheeler Hall in Ware Student Center. Admission is free.

Sponsored by Colby-Sawyer's Cross Cultural Club (CCC) and Center for International and Diversity Programs (CIDP), the festival will feature students representing their home countries with table displays, traditional cuisine and games, and native art and artifacts.

A half-hour fashion show at 6:30 p.m. will showcase traditional attire. At 7 p.m., students will have the opportunity to compete in a talent show with cash prizes.

According to Kimberly Sauerwein, director of CIDP, the International Festival presents an opportunity for anyone to have their mind opened to new cultures and possible adventures. “Learning about another culture can help all of us to look at the world from a new point of view, enabling us to empathize with those who are different than us, understand the world in new ways and problem solve more creatively,” she said.

International students comprise 12 percent of the Colby-Sawyer student body and come from every continent but Antarctica.
