'Fearless' Photography Exhibit Showcases Jeff Sheng's
Portraiture of the LGBT Community

NEW LONDON, N.H., Sept. 25, 2012 – Colby-Sawyer College will host "Fearless," an exhibition featuring work by nationally renowned portrait photographer Jeff Sheng. Begun in 2003, Sheng's "Fearless" brings high school and college athletes who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender into focus as athletes first, whether they are poised on the edge of a diving board or striking a commanding pose on the basketball court.

The photographs will be displayed on the first floor of the Dan and Kathleen Hogan Sports Center throughout the month of October. The opening reception will take place on Friday, October 12, on Court One in the Hogan Sports Center from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and begin with Sheng discussing his work, followed by a question and answer session. Refreshments will be available. Admission is free.

After nearly ten years travelling across the United States and Canada, Sheng has produced more than 150 portraits for the series, which has been exhibited in venues including the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, ESPN and Nike headquarters, the 2009 International LGBT Human Rights Conference, and the Pride House at the 2012 London Olympics.

“While these individuals are only a small segment of the LGBT community,” Sheng says, "I wanted to photograph them and give them visibility because they exemplify a particular courage and self-confidence in being 'out' at a very young age while also competitively participating in the often-times homophobic world of sports. More importantly, these individuals do not let fear stand in the way of being true to themselves and enjoying what life has to offer. This is a lesson that is universal."
