Colby-Sawyer Awards Faculty Promotions

In recognition of excellent teaching, service and scholarship, Colby-Sawyer College has promoted Associate Professor of Humanities Tom Kealy of New London to full professor, the highest faculty rank, and Assistant Professor of Fine and Performing Arts Hilary Walrod of Contoocook to associate professor.

“[These promotions] are indications of the collective recognition of the ongoing excellence of the faculty members' teaching, service and scholarship and creative work,” said Academic Vice President and Dean of Faculty Deb Taylor.

“Professor Kealy is an active and reflective teacher who encourages active learning on the part of students and develops new methodologies,” says Vice President Taylor.

Professor Kealy's upcoming leadership in a grant-funded Digital Humanities project is, according to Vice President Taylor, on the cutting edge of scholarship in the humanities. During his sabbatical next year, he will co-lead a project that will create a digital map of the literature and culture of al-Andalus [Medieval Andalusia in southern Spain] and interpret the resulting database through data mining software.

Professor Walrod looks forward to continuing to develop the Graphic Design program at Colby-Sawyer, which she envisions as situated at the intersection of liberal education and pre-professional preparation.

“[Professor Walrod's] course design and teaching reach to the use of new technologies of web design and app development to prepare students to be comfortable in the newer arts modalities,” Vice President Taylor says. “A rigorous and engaging teacher, she deepens students' engagement with graphic design principles and practices while blending their understanding of that discipline with other areas across the arts, the liberal arts and sciences, and environmental issues.”
