NEW LONDON, N.H., March 14, 2012 – Colby-Sawyer College will host the 21st Annual Exercise and Sport Sciences and Athletics Symposium, which this year focuses on the Olympics. The symposium will include presentations on how Olympics organizing committees operate and caring for the Olympic athlete.

The Exercise and Sport Sciences and Athletics Symposium takes place on Monday, March 26, 2012 in Wheeler Hall at the Ware Campus Center. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Lectures are free admission. Lunch is $15 for professionals and $10 for students and senior citizens. The first session, “Olympic Games Organizing Committees: What Are They and How DoThey Work?,” will be presented at 8:30 a.m. by Milena M. Parent, Ph.D., an associate professor in sport management at the School of Human Kinetics, University of Ottawa. She is a Research Fellow of the North American Society for Sport Management and her area of expertise is the management of major sports events. She is interested in organization theory, strategic management, network governance, and partnerships between the organizing committees and their stakeholders.

Professor Parent has published in leading management and sport management journals such as Journal of Sport Management, European Sport Management Quarterly, Sport Management Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Corporate Reputation Review, International Journal of Sport Policy, and Event Management. She is also the author of book chapters, is the author of three books and the co-author of Understanding Sport Organizations: The Application of Organization Theory (2nd ed.) with Prof. Trevor Slack. She is a board member of the Research Centre for Sport in Canadian Society and an invited associate professor at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences.

Kristine A. Karlson will lead the 9:55 a.m. session "Caring for the Olympic Athlete." It wasn't until she was in medical school that Karlson's talent for rowing emerged. She competed on the U.S. national team and the 1992 Olympic team. During that time she was a three-time world champion, and she finished fifth in the Olympics. Since retiring from competing, she has been practicing a combination of family medicine and sports medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. She has travelled all over the world with the U.S. rowing team as team physician for 11 overseas trips, including serving as a team physician for the 2008 Olympic team.

After a short break, Jack Fabian, Ph.D., head coach of the Keene State College swimming and diving program, will offer the final presentation, "The Big Year," at 11:05 a.m. Dr. Fabian has gained a great deal of experience working with elite, nationally ranked swimmers through his involvement with the Greenwood Memorial Swim Club and USA Swimming. Coach Fabian has been the personal coach of an open water swimmer on the USA National team since 2007, and has been a member of the USA Swimming National team coaching staff. Fabian has had the opportunity to attend National Team coaching conferences and to train elite swimmers at altitude for the past three years at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. By working with swimmers there he has gained insight from working side by side with the best coaches in the nation. Fabian is currently the open water coordinator for New England Swimming and also runs a master's swim program at Keene State College.

The symposium will host a buffet luncheon at 12:20 p.m.
