Colby-Sawyer College Symposium to Explore Entrepreneurial Ideas, Opportunities in Exercise and Sport Sciences

NEW LONDON, N.H., March 9, 2007 – The Departments of Exercise and Sport Sciences and Athletics at Colby-Sawyer College will host a symposium on “Entrepreneurial Ideas and Opportunities in Exercise and Sport Sciences” this month.

The symposium will take place on Monday, March 26, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Wheeler Hall at the Ware Campus Center. The lectures are free and open to the public. Lunch tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. To register for the event, contact Terri Hermann at (603) 526-3616 or thermann@colby-sawyer.edu.

The symposium will feature a presentation by Brandy K. Cruthird, founder and owner of Body by Brandy Fitness Studio in Boston, who will discuss “Changing Lives One Workout at a Time.” Scott Andrews, a health management coach with Wellness Coaches USA, Inc., will present “Emerging Opportunities: Industrial Athletes.” Alexander Wolff, a staff writer for Sports Illustrated since 1980, will speak about “Big Dreams, Small Scale: Taking Pro Basketball to Main Street Vermont.”

“In a climate of economic uncertainty, this symposium offers potential strategies for financial empowerment in the sport and exercise industry,” says Exercise and Sport Sciences Professor Russell Medbery. “It offers opportunities to spark creative ideas for students and professionals in the field.”

Brandy Cruthird is a certified personal trainer and one of the few black women in the country to own and operate a gymnasium. She has been recognized with the Harvard School of Public Health Rebecca Lee Award and the Girl Scouts 2001 Leading Women Award, and her fitness studio was selected as the Best New Business of 2005 by The Boston Globe.

Scott Andrews uses his athletic training skill sets to work with industrial athletes. Only two years ago, he was one of only 14 people in a company that has now grown to more than 60 across the country. He previously worked as an athletic trainer with organizations such as Harvard University, the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and HealthSouth. Andrews' firm, Wellness Coaches USA, is a leading provider of a wellness model that seeks to improve employee health and safety by providing wellness coaches in the workplace.

Alexander Wolff's work for Sports Illustrated magazine has been anthologized in The Best American Sports Writing, Best Sports Stories, and Sports Illustrated's Fifty Years of Great Writing. He is the author or co-author of six books about basketball, including Big Game, Small World: A Basketball Adventure, which the New York Times Book Review named a Notable Book for 2002. He has served on the faculty of the New England Young Writers Conference and as a Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton, where he taught an undergraduate seminar called Writing about Sports and the Wider World.
