Colby-Sawyer College Professor Ann Page Stecker is Featured Speaker for 2008 Women Who Make a Difference Event in New London
NEW LONDON, N.H. – The 2008 Women Who Make a Difference Luncheon will feature Ann Page Stecker, professor of Humanities at Colby-Sawyer College, as its keynote speaker. Professor Stecker will discuss “Speaking of Etiquette: Mary Elizabeth Wilson Sherwood & Judith Martin,” the subject of her current research and writing.
The event, which benefits the Pediatric Programs of the Lake Sunapee Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, begins at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, in Wheeler Hall at Colby-Sawyer's Ware Campus Center. The Women Who Make a Difference event, founded by Wilmot resident Gail Matthews, honors women, female high school students and organizations each year that contribute significantly to their communities and to society. Proceeds from the event support immunizations, family support groups, and care and support of high-risk babies, chronically ill children and low-income families in more than 20 area communities.
Professor Stecker is currently researching etiquette and conduct books, and writing a biography of Mary Elizabeth Sherwood, a 19th-century writer. She joined Colby-Sawyer in 1980 as an instructor and today teaches courses in environmental literature, regional history, women's studies, British literature and literature theory, and serves as coordinator of the Wesson Honors Program. Professor Stecker is also the author of New Hampshire: Crosscurrents in its Development; Sisters of Fortune; and Our Voices, Our Town: A History of New London 1950-2000.
