Student Organizations at Colby-Sawyer to Host Presidential Primary Convention

NEW LONDON, N.H. — The Student Democrats Association, Peace and Justice Club and other student organizations will host a convention of representatives from the 2008 presidential campaigns at Colby-Sawyer College.

The convention will take place Monday, Dec. 10, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in Wheeler Hall at the Ware Campus Center. Community members are invited to attend and admission is free.

The event is an opportunity for students and community members to hear representatives from both Republican and Democratic campaigns discuss their platforms.

Those in attendance will learn how to register to vote, and school clubs may bring their political questions and issues to be discussed.

According to founder and vice president of the Student Democrats Association Xanthe Jeannette Hilton '11, “The SDA is trying to create a campus wide awareness by making sure that people know what is happening in the world around them, and how the changes in the world will affect their futures in a very real way.”

SDA President Andrew Francis '11 wants people to understand that this is not a typical political convention and that food and a raffle will be available to those who attend. “We're trying to get the message and information out in a way that's fun for students and useful for everyone, and we hope that they'll come and have a good time,” he says.

Representatives from the Clinton, Dodd, Edwards, Kucinich, Obama, Paul and Richardson campaigns are scheduled to participate, while the Romney and Thompson campaigns have not yet confirmed. Notable speakers will include Rand Paul, M.D., son of Republican candidate Ron Paul, and Vin Gopal, Dennis Kucinich's deputy national campaign manager.
