Investment Management Students Attend G.A.M.E. IV Forum; Get Inside Look at New York's Key Financial Sites

Students enrolled in Colby-Sawyer College's Investment Management course attended the Quinnipiac Global Asset Management Education (G.A.M.E.) IV Forum in New York, N.Y., on Thursday, March 20.

Business majors Nishchal Banskota '15, Kyle Nelson '15, Xurong Peng '15 and Rym Soltani '15 attended the G.A.M.E. Forum and presented the 2013 performance of the Suzanne '66 and John Hammond Student Managed Investment Fund ending on Dec. 31.

“It was a phenomenal experience,” said Banskota. “Being able to ask questions firsthand to top leaders of the financial services industry was remarkable.”

Business majors Nicholas Ciarlante '14, Rebecca Ferman '14, Nghia Ngo '15, Asmita Niraula '15, Brandon Tobasky '15 and Anurup Upadhyay '15 joined the group from Sunday, March 23, through Monday, March 24, for an inside look at key New York City financial institutions and other sites, including NASDAQ's opening bell, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the Federal Reserve Bank and the 9/11 Memorial.

“Studying order types, circuit breakers and other concepts in class is one thing, but talking to designated market makers from Barclays about their role at the NYSE trading floor is a completely different experience,” Niraula said. “I am thankful to Colby-Sawyer and the Business Administration Department for making this trip possible.”

Colby-Sawyer's Student Managed Investment Fund
Colby-Sawyer's Investment Management course offers students an unusual level of engagement in and outside of the classroom. In addition to annual visits to New York City, experiential activities also include investing real dollars in the stock market. The Suzanne '66 and John Hammond Student Managed Investment Fund provides the opportunity to trade stocks and to understand the workings of the market through direct experience. The fund began with a gift of $25,000 from the Hammonds, and as of March 2014, it had a value just shy of $300,000.

“The Student Managed Investment Fund gives students the opportunity to deal with real dollars,” said Professor Jody Murphy. “The Investment Management field trip is an optional component of the course that gives the students the opportunity to see things firsthand that they would otherwise only read about or see in news clips.”

The fund has grown significantly due to individual gifts and an endowment allocation from the Colby-Sawyer Board of Trustees. The allocation was the direct result of students' presentation to the board, in which they requested an opportunity to manage a portion of the college's endowed funds. In the fall of 2012 the trustees approved their request and appropriated $50,000 for the student managed investment fund, with additional funding conditional on meeting investment and reporting goals.

The G.A.M.E. IV Forum
The Quinnipiac Global Asset Management Education (G.A.M.E.) IV Forum, founded by David Sauer, a finance professor in the School of Business at Quinnipiac University, provides an international group of college students and faculty with a unique opportunity to interact with industry leaders to learn best practices in investment management.

Keynote panels discussed the global economy, global stock markets, corporate governance and provided a Federal Reserve perspective. Day two included a variety of breakout discussion panels, workshops and keynote perspectives. The forum concluded with panels discussing career opportunities within the financial services industry.
