Colby-Sawyer College Hosts Annual Gladys Greenbaum Meyers Juried Student Art Exhibition

Colby-Sawyer College's Fine and Performing Arts Department will host the 41st Annual Gladys Greenbaum Meyers Juried Student Art Exhibition, featuring students' latest works in ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, watercolor and mixed-media. The reception will be held on Thursday, March 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Marian Graves Mugar Art Gallery, Sawyer Fine Arts Center. An awards ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Each year Colby-Sawyer students, regardless of their academic concentration, are invited to submit five pieces of work for adjudication. The Fine and Performing Arts faculty evaluate about 250 entries for their quality of idea, level of originality, and evidence of the students' understanding and use of formal elements of composition and their demonstration of appropriate skill and craftsmanship.

In addition to the awards for Best in Show in each discipline, second- and third-place winners will also be recognized. Scholarships will be awarded to students deemed to have the strongest suite of accepted works. A panel representing the Financial Services Department will choose one student to create a commissioned piece for the college. The Tomie dePaola Paper Awards, which are sponsored by the renowned artist and children's author, honor student achievements in drawing, watercolor, painting, graphic design and printmaking.

Mugar Art Gallery Director and Professor of Fine and Performing Arts Loretta Barnett attributes the show's popularity to the students themselves. “Students spend hours and hours in the studios creating and refining their works of art, and the exhibit will showcase the best student work from across all disciplines,” said Barnett. “There will be something in this exhibition for everyone to enjoy.”

Following the opening, the exhibition will be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. though Friday, April 11. The exhibition is made possible by a generous endowment gift established by Gladys Greenbaum Meyers, a graduate of the Class of 1939.
