Colby-Sawyer College To Host Celtic Music Singer/Songwriter Cathie Ryan

NEW LONDON, N.H., Feb. 6, 2008 – Colby-Sawyer College will host a performance by Irish-American singer and songwriter Cathie Ryan, whose four CD releases and appearances on more than 40 Celtic music compilations have established her as one of the most popular performers in the genre.

The performance will take place on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at 7 p.m. in the Sawyer Center Theatre. Tickets may be purchased at the door or reserved through the Colby-Sawyer Box Office by calling (603) 526-3670. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children.

Born in Detroit to Irish parents, Ryan recently moved to Ireland, the inspiration for her writing and musicianship. Versatile and talented, Ryan was the lead singer of the group Cherish the Ladies for seven years before going solo. Critics have raved about her soprano voice, including The Irish Times, which calls her a formidable solo performer and writes that her 2005 release, “The Farthest Wave,” secures Ryan's reputation as “a songwriter of substance … her distinctive soprano has pushed hard at the boundaries of [the] Celtic song tradition.”

Ryan has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and beyond. “There is nothing like a live show, being with an audience, sharing the music. That is the best part of being a singer and writing songs,” she says. At a live performance, The Irish Echo observed, “Cathie Ryan certainly knows how to communicate with her audience. And what she communicates through song are the enduring values of home, family, memory, and spirit.” The Los Angeles Times recently named Ryan one of the leading voices in Celtic music. Ryan is also the host for Irish pledge programming on New York's WNET, the most watched public television station in America. In addition, she leads workshops and tours of Ireland on Celtic mythology and music.
