Colby-Sawyer Professor Selected as 2015 NCAA Division III FAR Fellow

Ben Steele, Ph.D., professor of Natural Sciences and Colby-Sawyer Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR), has been selected as one of the 2015 NCAA Division III FAR Fellows by the FAR Fellows Institute Planning Committee. The Institute, launched in 2010, aims to increase the effectiveness of Division III FARs at the campus, conference and national levels.

Professor Steele has served as Colby-Sawyer's FAR for the past three years. In that role, he ensures student-athletes meet both NCAA's and Colby-Sawyer's requirements for eligibility for practice. Student-athletes also recognize him as a source of information and an advocate for their well-being.

Professor Steele will participate in a three-day professional development program in October at the NCAA national office in Indianapolis. The program provides a thorough examination of best practices and issues surrounding the role and responsibility of the FAR, helps FAR Fellows develop the leadership skills necessary to carry out their responsibilities on campus and in their conference, and strengthens the network of FARs needed to serve on conference, divisional and association-wide committees.

“The Institute comes highly recommended by other FARs, and I will get a lot of ideas from my peers and from the leadership at NCAA,” says Professor Steele. “I hope to discover new and imaginative ways to integrate athletics and academics at Colby-Sawyer.”

Professor Steele joined the Colby-Sawyer faculty in 1988 and teaches courses in ecology, animal behavior, evolution and conservation biology. A recipient of the M. Roy London Endowed Chair, Professor Steele's work and vocation combine excellence in teaching with an influential and attentive persona on campus and in the wider community. Professor Steele holds a B.A. from Harvard University, an M.S. from Utah State University and a Ph.D. from Dartmouth College. He is a resident of Etna, N.H.
