Colby-Sawyer President Thomas C. Galligan Jr. to Speak at Annual Meeting of Adventures in Learning

NEW LONDON, N.H., May 1, 2007 – Thomas C. Galligan Jr., the new president of Colby-Sawyer College, will be the keynote speaker at the eighth annual meeting of Adventures in Learning, the lifelong learning program sponsored by the college. The subject of President Galligan's talk will be “So, what is a major? The past, present and future of the undergraduate major.”

The meeting, which is open to all adult residents in the area, will be held on Thursday, May 17, at 4 p.m. in Wheeler Hall at the Ware Campus Center. During the annual meeting, Adventures in Learning members will elect new members to the organization's Board of Directors, who, in turn, will elect officers for the coming year. They will also honor two members of the Board who have concluded their terms—Ben Acard and Dusty Logan, both from New London.

President Galligan, who succeeded Anne Ponder as Colby-Sawyer's eighth president, assumed leadership on Aug 1, 2006. He came to the college from the University of Tennessee where he was a professor of law and the dean of the College of Law. President Galligan earned an A.B. in political science from Stanford University, a J.D. from the University of Puget Sound School of Law, and an L.L.M. degree from Columbia University Law School.

Established in 1998, Adventures in Learning offers a variety of study groups, tours and activities for residents of the Kearsarge-Lake Sunapee area. Most of the study groups are led by Adventures in Learning members. Peer-learning lies at the heart of the many lifelong learning programs that are associated with colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Reservations for the annual meeting and reception are required and should be made with Janet St. Laurent by Friday, May 11, at (603) 526-3690 or jstlaure@colby-sawyer.edu. To learn more about Adventures in Learning, visit their Web site at www.colby-sawyer.edu/adventures.
