Colby-Sawyer College's Exercise and Sport Sciences Symposium Focuses on Technology in Sport and Movement
Colby-Sawyer College will host the 23rd Annual Exercise and Sport Sciences Symposium, focusing on the role of technology in athletics, on Monday, March 24, 2014 in Wheeler Hall located in the Ware Student Center. The symposium starts at 8:30 a.m. All are welcome and admission is free.
Three experts will speak about the use of modern technology in generating evidence for the acute care of catastrophic sport injury; integrating new technologies in training; and social media in college athletics.
After opening remarks by Colby-Sawyer Academic Vice President and Dean of Faculty Deborah Taylor, the first session, “The Use of Modern Technology in Generating Evidence for the Acute Care of Catastrophic Sport Injury,” begins at 8:40 with Erik E. Swartz, professor and clinical coordinator of athletic training education at University of New Hampshire. Dr. Swartz received a B.S. from St. Bonaventure University and an M.A. through the Approved Graduate Athletic Training Program at Western Michigan University. He completed his Ph.D. in Applied Biomechanics at the University of Toledo. Dr. Swartz's research interest is studying the management of athletes with cervical spine injuries.
After a 10-minute break, Dr. Disa L. Hatfield, assistant professor of kinesiology at University of Rhode Island, will speak about the integration of new technologies in training. Dr. Hatfield earned her B.S. in exercise science from The Pennsylvania State University. She holds two master's degrees, one in psychology from Antioch University and one in kinesiology from University of Connecticut. Dr. Hatfield also earned a Ph.D. in kinesiology from University of Connecticut. Her research interests include the hormonal responses to resistance exercise, particularly the responses of Insulin-Like Growth Factor I and Growth Hormone. Dr. Hatfield also has research experience investigating the role of supplementation and resistance exercise, children and exercise, and the weight-loss and health benefits of differing diets in combination with resistance training.
The final speaker of the day is Kurt Svoboda '00, senior assistant athletic director at Stanford University. He will focus on how social media in college athletics can be used for much more than just publicity and marketing. Svoboda is responsible for disseminating information to appropriate stakeholders for Stanford's 36 athletic teams while serving as the primary contact for football. He leads the communications team in integrating relationships between the public and Stanford athletics – including university communications, multimedia, Pac-12 Digital, marketing, development, facilities, alumni and external relations and event operations. Svoboda works directly with marketing to communicate branding and promotional efforts in the department's print, venue and online platforms.
A baseball player at Colby-Sawyer, Svoboda was a four-year letter winner for the Chargers. As a first baseman, Svoboda helped the Chargers earn two Commonwealth Coast Conference baseball titles and finished his career as one of the all-time leaders in fielding percentage and put outs. After Colby-Sawyer, Svoboda worked at Franklin Pierce as an assistant baseball coach and sports information director. He earned his master's in liberal arts from Harvard University in 2009 where he also served as the Assistant Director of Athletics and was the department's chief public and media relations executive.
