Colby-Sawyer College to Host Spring Dance Ensemble
NEW LONDON, N.H., Feb. 22, 2011 – Colby-Sawyer College will host the 2011 Spring Dance Ensemble, featuring performances and choreography by Colby-Sawyer students and faculty, as well as guest choreographers. The performance, directed and co-choreographed by Adjunct Assistant Dance Professor Tara Holmes, features a collaborative cast performing lyrical, modern and jazz techniques.
The 2011 Spring Dance Ensemble, presented by the Colby-Sawyer Fine and Performing Arts Department, will take place at the Sawyer Center Theatre on Friday, March 25, and Saturday, March 26, at 7 p.m. Tickets for adults are $10 and student tickets are $5. The box office is open Wednesday, March 23, through Saturday, March 26; tickets may be purchased there or by calling for reservations at (603) 526-3670.
The cast of the 2011 Spring Dance Ensemble is comprised of Colby-Sawyer students who began the creative process by auditioning for the production and then created and adapted choreography from various disciplines. Student choreographers in the 2011 Spring Dance Ensemble include Richard Brassor, Amanda Gibbons, Mallory Rapalyea, Alyssa Sarno, Asia Seibert and Chloe Sempere. Other dancers from Colby-Sawyer are Kate Bjorklund, Pascale Chataigne, Scott Gross, Courtany Hanley, Andrea Hoyt, Sierra Lewis, Kate Morris, Ashley O'Malley, Laura Ready, Annie Sabean and Faedhra Wagnac. Local high school students will also perform and include Will Bolton, Maya Infrascelli, Brittany Irish, Sarah Metcalf and Megan Reid.
Guest choreographers include Amanda Whitworth, director of dance at Plymouth State University; Kelly Doremus Stuart, director of choreography at New England College and member of the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts; Adrienne Crombie, a graduate of Roger Williams University with a specialization in Dance Performance Studies, and Jenny Lucey, who spent last year in Baltimore with the modern dance company Shmib. With the combined creative energy of these choreographers and the enthusiasm of the dancers, the 2011 Spring Dance Ensemble promises to be a production with something for everyone.
Through the diversity of the 15 dances, the audience will gain an understanding of the collaborative process that aided in the creation of the show. Featured pieces include “Unknown Parts,” which looks at living in the moment and learning from experience; “Cascade,” a number that looks at the arrangement and fluidity of motion, and “Hung Up,” which explores the heartache people can feel for their loved ones.
