My Colby-Sawyer Experience

“The best way to teach is to show children that you are interested in their lives, and Windy Hill is certainly a part of their lives, so that is where we started.”
Kate Callahan, Child Development major

Spam and Malware

There are some steps that you can take to decrease the spam that reaches your inbox. Free games, screensavers, ringtones, etc. are common vectors for malware to infect your computer. Please note that Colby-Sawyer will NEVER request sensitive data (user ID, passwords, etc.) from anyone through an email. If you receive what appears to be such a request, please delete it, because it is spam!

1. Never reply to spam. "Unsubscribe" links can be ploys to confirm that your address is active. Replying often triggers more unwanted mail instead of less. Recognizing trustworthy sites is a matter of observation and experience.

2. Opt out of product information. Look carefully for opt out settings. Sometimes those options are obscured or hidden in hopes that you will overlook them, thus accepting default settings that opt you IN to receiving spam.

3. Do not download questionable freeware. Offerings of free downloads to 'super-charge your computer' or 'clean your system' are common ploys to lure you into revealing personal information, or installing their malware. Again, recognizing these is a matter of observation and experience. If uncertain, do not download it.

5. Comply with College policy. It is policy that you, and only you, are allowed to use your login. If you have visitors or family on campus and they want to use a computer they should do so only in the library with a library issued guest account. There are important security and confidentiality factors that make this policy essential.
