“We are used to working with sick patients in the hospital setting, so it was nice to see the other end of the spectrum and be able to raise awareness among the students.”

Do I need to own a computer? No, you are not required to own a computer to attend Colby-Sawyer College. Most students do bring their own computer and each year the number of student-owned computers grows. The College provides two fully equipped computer labs conveniently located in Colgate Hall and the Library/Learning Center. The standard lab computer is a 2.4GHz Compaq EVO running Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Office. In addition, there are a number of computer-equipped classrooms and specialized mini-labs. Each computer lab has a high duty-cycle laser printer for all students to use. If you decide to buy a computer, or bring one you already own, the following information may prove useful.
What should I buy? Colby-Sawyer College has adopted the PC as its standard because of the prevalence of PCs in the work place. The College does not sell hardware directly. Some good Internet sites to check for comparison pricing on hardware are: www.hp.com, www.dell.com and www.toshiba.com. Bundled options vary so comparison shop to get the best total package. Notebooks will have added functionality after the summer of 2005 when across campus wireless access is anticipated. See the back of this sheet for suggested configurations.
What do I need to access the Internet and Campus network from my residence hall? All CSC students have an assigned network/e-mail account for the duration of their enrollment. If you have your own computer and want to connect from your residence hall your computer will need to have an Ethernet port and cable. All residence halls have an Ethernet connection for each student. If you do not have your own computer you can get on-line from any lab or library computer. Network resources include file storage and sharing, program downloads, and peripheral sharing. Account information will be distributed to freshmen during orientation. There will be an on-line computer registration process explained during orientation.
Available Software CSC students are covered under a Campus Agreement with Microsoft Corporation and ESET to receive a free copy of Office Pro and NOD32 Antivirus for his or her personal computer. Office is the same Word-Processing/Database/ Spreadsheet/Presentation software package that is used in the computer labs, by faculty, and is required for CIS105 students. Details on the distribution method will be available during orientation.
No Electronic Theft Law (NET Act) Students are personally responsible to use the Internet in a legal and ethical manner. The college cannot protect students from legal action if they ignore copyright laws. Music and movie downloads are very popular and easy to acquire via the Internet but copyright laws often make this an illegal act. Please check http://www.colby-sawyer.edu/information/technology/netact.html for more details.
Student E-Mail Policy The College requires that all students use their Colby-Sawyer College email addresses for College related electronic correspondence on campus. The College sends all official e-mail communication with students via these addresses. Many types of important communications are transmitted only via email so we ask that you check your email frequently.
Colby-Sawyer College Anti-Virus Mandate Students intending to connect their own computers to the College network must install the Colby-Sawyer College version of Symantec (Norton) Corporate Edition AntiVirus The software is provided FREE of charge with the understanding that users will carefully read and follow installation instructions.
